The medical ailment, carpal tunnel syndrome, manifests as aching and discomfort in the hand and wrist. Compression of the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel at the wrist level is the root cause of this condition. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition that may be caused by overusing the muscles in the hands and wrists, which can happen at work or at home. Luckily, you can avoid carpal tunnel syndrome North Austin with a few easy actions, allowing you to concentrate on the job without being distracted by the uncomfortable symptoms of the condition.

If you are concerned about developing carpal tunnel syndrome, follow these four tips:

         1. Taking Frequent Breaks

Taking frequent breaks while at work is one of the best ways to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome. When working at a computer, get up and move around every 20 minutes. Stretch your arms and wrists, and take a few deep breaths. It is also a good idea to avoid positions that stress your wrists. Make sure your keyboard and mouse are in the right place and use a chair that supports your back and neck.

         2. Exercising Your Wrists

Exercising your wrists is a great way to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome. When working at your computer, make a conscious effort to move your wrists around. Stretch them out, do some circles, and ensure you give them a good workout.

Initially, it might feel weird, but it is worth it in the long run. Not only will you prevent carpal tunnel syndrome, but you will also be doing your muscles a favor. Who knows—maybe you will even start enjoying your workouts!

       3. Wearing a Splint at Night

If you are experiencing some of the early symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, it might help to wear a splint at night. It will keep your wrists in a neutral position, which can help to reduce inflammation and pain.

Many different splints are available, so you will want to talk to your doctor or physical therapist about the best one. Likewise, remember, it is essential to wear the splint for the recommended amount of time each day, or you might not see the results you are hoping for.

      4.  Adjusting Your Workstation

You can help prevent carpal tunnel syndrome by making simple adjustments to your workstation. Here are five tips to get you started:

    • Make sure your chair is comfortable and adjustable. You should be able to adjust the height, backrest, and armrests to satisfy you.
    • Keep your wrists straight when you are typing. Use a keyboard tray or armrests to keep your wrists in a neutral position.
    • Use a light touch when you are typing. Don’t pound on the keys—this can stress your hands and wrists.
    • Take breaks often. Get up and move around every hour to stretch your muscles and give your eyes a break.
    • Drink plenty of water. Hydration is key for keeping your muscles healthy and flexible

You can do a few things to help prevent carpal tunnel syndrome, such as taking breaks often, stretching your hands and wrists, and using a wrist brace if needed. If you are already experiencing some of the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, there are still things you can do to help ease the pain and discomfort, such as using a cold pack or heat pad, resting your hands and wrists, and taking over-the-counter pain medication.
