The 6 Best Interior Design Styles for Your Kitchen and Your Home

Bedrooms and bathrooms are highly valued in homes, but kitchens are also a very important room. While the amount of livable space (bedrooms, finished basements, etc.) is what determines the property value of the home the most, a newly renovated kitchen can also increase property value.

Even if you don’t plan on selling your home in the near or distant future, a simple renovation can make it look like an entirely new space— and you don’t have to be a top interior designer to redesign your home! Here are six of the most popular interior design styles for the kitchen.

    #1: Farmhouse

Farmhouse (whether Classic, Country, or Modern) is one of the most popular home designs, and it’s especially beautiful for kitchens. Many people choose to decorate their entire home in the Farmhouse style, complete with a Farmhouse garage door. The key to pulling off a Farmhouse look is to make it look rustic, yet cozy.

The perfect Farmhouse kitchen has cream, beige or modern white kitchen cabinets and either wood or marble countertops. You also can’t go wrong with hardwood floors (or vinyl that resembles hardwood), exposed wooden beams, and a classic Farmhouse sink.

    #2: Cottagecore

Cottagecore is very similar to Farmhouse, except that it mixes in some of the traditional and some natural elements with the rustic. This is another interior design style that people love to apply to their entire home (especially if it’s a small, cozy home), but a Cottagecore kitchen definitely gives off cozy vibes. Add to the Cottagecore style by hiring professional Picture Hanging Sydney to install some antique artwork on the walls. Add to the Cottagecore style by hiring professional Picture Hanging Sydney to install some antique artwork on the walls.. If you want a Cottagecore kitchen, use lots of flowers and plants in your design. You’ll also want rustic-looking cabinets, similar to Farmhouse, and display vintage china on open shelves. To really pull the look together, switch out your sink for a butlers’ sink and sheila maid. Moreover, Living Scented would also be a great platform to find all kind of ideas related to home decor and interior designs.

    #3: Contemporary

The Contemporary design emphasizes the clean and sleek. It’s pretty similar to the Modern design style, except that it also incorporates some more traditional touches.

For your Contemporary kitchen you’ll want to have a lot of stainless steel appliances, and you can even choose stainless steel countertops. If this is too much stainless steel for you, you can always go with white appliances. Finally, stick to the 60-30-10 rule when it comes to choosing colors for your kitchen:

    • 60% of your kitchen should be one, dominant color
    • 30% of your kitchen should be a secondary color
    • 10% of your kitchen should be an accent color

    #4: Coastal

There are hundreds of ways to create a Coastal style home. You can stick with beachy colors, such as light blues, greens, and turquoise, and even use sand-colored vinyl or laminate flooring. You can even go the Nautical route, leaning more towards the ocean.

To pull off a Coastal kitchen, make sure to stick with softer colors. Save your bright colors (such as a beachy coral) for the accents in your kitchen. Like Farmhouse and Cottagecore, you can bring a little of the outside inside, using seashells, sand, and palm plants as decor.

    #5: Modern

The Modern design style can be tricky to pull off, especially since it’s very similar to the Contemporary design style. They both emphasize sleek and minimal designs, but Contemporary is more dynamic compared to Modern.

For your Modern kitchen, you’ll want to stick with a monochromatic color scheme, rather than the 60-30-10 rule for colors. You can still stick with the stainless steel appliances, but you’ll definitely want to go with marble, slate, or even granite countertops over stainless steel countertops.

    #6: Industrial

The Industrial design style is one that’s very popular, especially in open-concept homes and homes that have been converted from a factory or other industrial building. It’s also a very functional design style— especially for the kitchen.

To achieve the industrial look in your kitchen start with concrete flooring or use vinyl tiles that resemble concrete. The color scheme for Industrial is very monochromatic, usually black and dark gray with wood or brick tones being the only accents of color. You can even wallpaper one of your kitchen walls in brick to give it that exposed look. As for countertops and cabinetry, go with granite and natural wood, respectively.

To really nail a design style, you have to follow the rules exactly since many design styles overlap. Still, you can create your own version of a style by incorporating other styles into it, such as combining Coastal and Farmhouse, or Modern and Industrial. You can always add your own personal touch to any design style to really make it your own. If you aren’t comfortable doing it yourself, you can always work with a home remodeling service or interior designer.
