Trends in Telemedicine and Benefits for Patients

Healthcare providers have been adopting telemedicine since the advent of COVID-19. The number of medical services delivered through digital communications has increased 63 times since 2019. You can take advantage of its convenience by scheduling Bridgewater, NJ. Telehealth visits. This article explores the trends and benefits of telemedicine.

Digital-first approach for convenient patient care

About seven in ten respondents in a survey say they prefer simplified access to healthcare services. More patients want to see their provider through a digital medium than through an in-person setting.

Telemedicine’s digital-first principle aims to deliver care over video conferencing. Patients can schedule appointments and complete treatment sessions from the comfort of their homes. As more healthcare providers implement digitization, the patient’s first point of contact will be through telehealth services.

Healthcare providers offer two types of telemedicine services:

    • Synchronous: The approach involves real-time sessions with a medical professional. You can discuss your symptoms or receive prescriptions. The doctor interacts directly with the patient, which offers opportunities to clarify health information or misconceptions.
    • Asynchronous: Asynchronous telemedicine stores and transmits health data to be used later. A patient may send medical files or an email with details about their symptoms. It helps providers complete a thorough information review before talking to the patient. Practitioners may also refer the case to medical providers.

Transforming patient education with telemedicine services

Healthcare practitioners recognize patient education as one of the pillars of managing symptoms. The process equips patients with science-backed information for chronic conditions. Education can help patients with COPD manage weight and plan their nutrition for the best outcomes.

Unfortunately, patients have limited access to education through in-person interactions. The demands of modern living are making face-to-face interactions more challenging.

Since in-person visits have many challenges, patients tend to turn to other sources of information. That may predispose them to misinformation from unreliable sources. So the lack of education may affect outcomes even after receiving treatment.

Virtual visits can overcome the barriers to in-person patient education. Telemedicine ensures patients get the correct information regarding their health.

    Telemedicine consultation for special groups

In-person appointments are most challenging for seniors and people with disabilities. Visiting the hospital is often inconvenient due to factors like distance or cost. Geriatric patients may choose to skip the doctor’s visit to avoid discomfort.

Geriatric patients require medical care since their immune system is weakening. Some seniors avoid routine hospital visits because of the fear of contracting a disease or an infection.

Many healthcare providers are utilizing telehealth to offer consultations for seniors. The patient does not have to leave their home to talk to a medical professional. It eliminates the fear of contracting diseases in a hospital setting.

Teleconsulting is also convenient for caregivers and family members who care for seniors with debilitating conditions. It reduces the task of carrying and shuttling the patient from home to the hospital for checkups. Telemedicine can also impart knowledge to the people taking care of the patient.
